Blue Flower Petal Cupping Plate Montipora, Montipora sp., is a plating stony coral known for developing broad, overlapping plates with gently cupped or ruffled margins. This specimen displays a vivid yellow-green to chartreuse base with warmer golden tones across the surface, scattered darker accents, and a pale contrasting growth edge. As the colony develops, the plates can expand outward and upward in layered, flower-petal-like formations, creating the distinctive cupping growth reflected in its name. Montipora corals contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide most of their nutritional energy, while their small polyps can also capture fine suspended plankton and organic particles. Because many plating Montipora species can appear similar and species-level identification cannot be confirmed reliably from a photograph alone, Montipora sp. is the scientifically appropriate designation.

Care Guide: Montipora sp. generally performs best under moderate to strong reef lighting with moderate to strong, variable water movement. Good circulation helps prevent detritus from settling across the plates and within developing folds while supporting gas exchange and nutrient delivery. Place on stable rockwork with ample room for the colony to spread outward as the plates enlarge and overlap. Maintain stable temperature and salinity along with consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium to support calcification. Nitrate and phosphate should remain measurable and stable rather than being driven excessively low. Most nutrition comes from photosynthesis, though fine planktonic foods and suspended particulate material may provide supplemental nutrition. Like other Montipora, this coral benefits from mature, stable reef conditions and gradual acclimation when moved to stronger lighting.
