Daisy Polyps, Knopia octocontacanalis, are a colonial octocoral in the family Clavulariidae. The species is distinctive for its flower-like polyps, each with eight broad tentacles whose margins are formed by closely arranged finger-like structures rather than the free feathery pinnules seen in many other octocorals. NCBI This colony displays dusty rose to pink polyps with vivid fluorescent yellow centers, creating the small daisy-like appearance reflected in its common name. Knopia octocontacanalis is photosynthetic and contains symbiotic dinoflagellates, while its exposed polyps are also positioned to intercept fine suspended food particles. The currently accepted scientific name is Knopia octocontacanalis. NCBI

Care Guide: Daisy Polyps generally do well under low to moderate reef lighting with moderate, variable water movement. Flow should keep debris from settling across the colony while still allowing the polyps to remain fully extended. Place the colony on stable rockwork where it can receive consistent light and circulation. Because colonies can spread laterally across available substrate, an isolated rock can be useful if you want to control future expansion. Maintain stable temperature and salinity and avoid abrupt changes in lighting or water chemistry. Their symbiotic algae provide much of their energy through photosynthesis, while fine suspended plankton and organic material may supplement nutrition. Knopia octocontacanalis is documented as zooxanthellate. ResearchGate
