Neon Polyp Scrolling Turbinaria Coral

Neon Polyp Scrolling Turbinaria, Turbinaria sp., is a colonial stony coral known for forming broad plates, cups, and scrolling growth forms. This WYSIWYG specimen displays a dark burgundy to brown-purple base covered with numerous intensely fluorescent neon green polyps, creating a striking high-contrast appearance under reef lighting. The evenly distributed raised corallites and broad plating structure are characteristic of Turbinaria. These corals contain symbiotic zooxanthellae that provide much of their nutritional energy through photosynthesis, while their polyps can also capture fine suspended and meaty foods. As the colony grows, it may develop more pronounced folds, cups, or scroll-like plates. Because species-level identification cannot be confirmed reliably from the photograph alone, Turbinaria sp. is the scientifically appropriate designation.

Care Guide: Turbinaria sp. generally performs best under moderate reef lighting with moderate, indirect to turbulent water movement. Good circulation is especially important for scrolling and plating forms because it helps prevent detritus from settling on the broad colony surface. Place on stable middle rockwork with enough space for future outward and upward growth. Maintain stable temperature, salinity, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, and phosphate. Although primarily photosynthetic, Turbinaria can benefit from occasional feeding with appropriately sized planktonic or meaty foods. Acclimate gradually to stronger lighting and avoid a constant concentrated jet directly against the tissue.
