Purple Polyp Stylophora, Stylophora pistillata, is a branching reef-building coral known for its compact growth form, rounded branch tips, and densely distributed polyps. This WYSIWYG specimen displays green fluorescent tissue with contrasting burgundy-purple to reddish polyps and pale lavender-white polyp tips, creating a strongly textured appearance when fully extended. Stylophora pistillata contains symbiotic zooxanthellae that provide most of its nutritional energy through photosynthesis, while its numerous small polyps can also capture fine suspended planktonic foods. Colonies typically develop sturdy, closely spaced branches and can grow into dense, bushy formations under stable reef aquarium conditions. Stylophora is generally considered somewhat more forgiving than many Acropora while still benefiting greatly from consistent water chemistry and strong circulation.

Care Guide: Stylophora pistillata generally performs best under moderate to high reef lighting with moderate to strong, turbulent water movement. Randomized circulation helps deliver nutrients throughout the colony and prevents detritus from accumulating between branches. Place on stable middle to upper rockwork with sufficient room for future branching growth. Maintain stable temperature, salinity, alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium, along with consistent measurable nitrate and phosphate. Avoid rapid alkalinity or salinity changes. Most nutrition is supplied through photosynthesis, although very fine planktonic foods may provide supplemental nutrition. Gradually acclimate the coral when introducing it to substantially stronger lighting.
