Jack-O-Lantern Leptoseris, Leptoseris sp., is an encrusting to plating stony coral prized for its intense fluorescence and strongly contrasting coloration. This specimen displays a brilliant orange to golden-orange base crossed by darker reddish-orange ridges, with numerous fluorescent yellow-green corallite centers scattered throughout the colony. The irregular folds, valleys, and radiating surface ridges give the coral a highly textured appearance that becomes especially dramatic under blue-spectrum reef lighting. Leptoseris corals contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide much of their nutritional energy, while their small polyps can also capture fine suspended plankton and organic particles. Several Leptoseris species can display similar growth forms, so species-level identification cannot be established reliably from appearance alone; Leptoseris sp. is therefore the scientifically appropriate designation.

Care Guide: Leptoseris sp. generally performs well under low to moderate lighting, making it useful for lower or partially shaded areas of a reef aquarium. Avoid abruptly placing the coral under intense lighting; gradual acclimation is recommended. Provide low to moderate, variable water movement sufficient to prevent detritus from accumulating within the ridges and valleys without subjecting the thin tissue to excessive direct flow. Place on stable rockwork where the colony has room to encrust and plate outward. Maintain stable temperature and salinity along with consistent alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium to support skeletal growth. Nitrate and phosphate should remain measurable and stable. Most nutrition comes from photosynthesis, although very fine planktonic foods and suspended organic material can supplement its diet. Provide adequate separation from neighboring corals as the colony expands.
